Southern New Hampshire University softball dropped a 4-3 decision to Saint Michael's College in a rain-delayed game on Saturday afternoon to conclude the regular season. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Purple Knights struck early and held off a late rally to earn a 4-3 victory.
- Saint Michael's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run from CJ Davidson.
- SNHU responded in the second inning when sophomore Livi Sousa (Hudson, Mass.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Alyssa Abbott (Hudson, N.H.) and cut the deficit in half.
- The Penmen tied the game in the fourth inning as senior Sidney Rose (Davidson, N.C.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Abbott and make it 2-2.
- After a rain delay of nearly three hours, Saint Michael's regained the lead in the sixth inning when Madi Liimatainen doubled home two runs to put the Purple Knights back in front, 4-2.
- SNHU answered in the seventh inning, as Abbott singled home freshman Tori Christie (Barnstead, N.H.) to cut the deficit to one, but the Penmen were unable to complete the comeback.
- Abbott led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while senior Abby Lineman (Doylestown, Pa.) added a pair of hits.
- Junior Julianna Colbert (Burrillville, R.I.) struck out 10 in a complete-game effort in the circle.
NOTES
- SNHU finishes the regular season with a 30-19 overall record and a 22-13 mark in Northeast 10 play.
- The Penmen will enter the Northeast 10 Championship as the No. 3 seed.
- SNHU will host No. 6 Saint Anselm College in the opening round on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
- Under the NE10 Championship format, the Penmen need one win to advance to the semifinals, while Saint Anselm must win twice.
- SNHU secured a home game in the opening round by finishing two games ahead of fourth-place Assumption in the standings.
- Saint Michael's snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Penmen with the win on Saturday with SNHU leading all-time 52-11.
