Women's Soccer Suffers Setback at Merrimack

WOMEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS SETBACK AT MERRIMACK

NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Senior Julie Anderson (Middletown, RI) and sophomore Gabrielle Gramprey (Brockton, MA) scored early second-half goals to lead the Merrimack College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 action Wednesday night at Warrior Field.

Senior Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, NJ) made three saves for the Warriors, who won their second-straight game to move to 2-0-1 (1-0-0 NE-10) on the season. Stef Young (Natick, MA) made four saves for the Penmen, who fell to 1-1-0 (0-1-0 NE-10).

The two teams played to a scoreless first half with the Warriors holding s 10-7 edge in shots. Merrimack stormed out of the gates in the second half, scoring twice in the opening 10:26 to grab a 2-0 lead. Anderson opened the scoring when she split the defense and fired a shot over Young's head for her fourth goal of the season at 47:05.

Just over eight minutes later, Gramprey one-timed a pass from senior Amy Pelletier (Hudson, MA) to push the lead to 2-0. Senior Hillary McGarr (North Dighton, MA) started the play with a pass to Pelletier on the right wing and picked up the second assist.

Freshman Lindsey DuMont (Littleton, MA) capped the scoring with her second goal of the season at 88:39, taking a feed from Gramprey and beating Young inside the left corner.

The Warriors outshot the Penmen 21-13, who held a 12-11 edge in fouls.

The Warriors return to action this Saturday when they travel to New York to face Dominican College at 2 p.m.  Southern New Hampshire hosts nationally-ranked New Haven in the first round of the SNHU Tournament on Saturday at 4:00, with UMass Lowell and Bridgeport squaring off in the first game at 2:00 pm.
