MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University and
UMass Lowell played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in Northeast-10
women's soccer Tuesday night at Larkin Field. The Penmen are
now 8-4-4 and 7-4-3 in NE-10 play, while the River Hawks are 7-4-5
and 6-3-5 in the league. The game marked the Northeast-10
finale for both schools.
With the tie, SNHU has secured the
No. 5 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament, which starts
Sunday. The Penmen will be on the road for a quarterfinal
game and will learn their opponent Wednesday when league play
concludes.
SNHU got on the board just 2:21
into the contest when Sophia Saint Paul (Brockton,
MA) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season off an assist
from Ariel Teixeira (Warren, RI). The River
Hawks would tie the game 2:45 before halftime when Kaitlynn McHugh
recorded an unassisted tally.
UMass Lowell had the best chance to
score the game-winner with just under three minutes left in the
second overtime session. UML's Maddy Bissaillon fired a shot
from close range off a corner kick, but SNHU keeper Stef
Young (Natick, MA) made a point-blank save to preserve the
tie.
Young turned aside eight shots for
the Penmen, who were outshot 23-8 on the evening. UMass
Lowell keeper Jamie Gillis stopped three shots.
SNHU closes out the regular season
Friday when it hosts Adelphi University in a non-league game
starting at 3:00.
