MANCHESTER, N.H
– No. 1 seed Southern New Hampshire University advanced to
the championship match of the 2010 Northeast-10 Women's Tennis
Championship with a 5-0 win over No. 4 seed Saint Michael's College
Friday afternoon at the SNHU courts. The Penmen, who extended
their school-record winning streak to 17 games, are now 18-1
overall, while the Purple Knights are now 12-8 on the season.
SNHU will meet second-seeded
Stonehill College, a 5-2 winner over No. 3 seed Adelphi University
in Friday's other semifinal, in the championship match
Sunday. That match, which will take place at Stonehill as a
predetermined site, is slated for a 3:30 start.
The Penmen swept the three doubles
matches, as NE-10 Player of the Year Amber
Chandronnait (Bow, N.H.) and NE-10 Freshman of the
Year Alena
Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) were 8-2 winners at No.
1 doubles. Catalina
Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and Alison Waring
(Westboro, Mass.) were 8-6 winners at No. 2, while Samantha Jean
(Bedford, N.H.) and Kara Pease (Falmouth,
Mass.) were 8-5 winners at No. 3.
Chandronnait and Echeverry picked
up the two singles points for Southern New Hampshire, as
Chandronnait was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1. Echeverry earned
a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Southern New Hampshire is making
its first-ever appearance in the Northeast-10 championship
match. Stonehill is making its fifth appearance, and will be
looking to defend its 2009 tourney title. The Penmen handed
the Skyhawks their only defeat in conference play, winning 6-3 in a
match played at SNHU on April 1.
