–Third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University
advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Women's
Tennis Championship with a 5-2 win over No. 6 seed Adelphi
University Friday evening at Queens College. The Penmen, who
have now won 19 matches in a row, improve to 20-1, while the
Panthers see their season come to a close at 14-4.
SNHU now advances to face
second-seeded Queens, a 5-0 winner over Saint Michael's in
Friday's other first round match. The match is slated
for a 10:00 am start Saturday, but will be pushed back to 11:00 am
if the match is moved indoors to Queens' indoor facility
should inclement weather arrive.
Southern New Hampshire rallied from
a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning each of the first four
singles matches to finish. Alena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) captured the first set from
Adelphi's Alda Ribeiro 6-1 at No. 2 before Ribeiro was forced
to retire with an injury. Samantha Jean
(Bedford, N.H.) would give the Penmen a 3-2 lead with a 6-0, 6-1
win at No. 5 before Amber Chandronnait (Bow, N.H.)
made it 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.
Kara Pease
(Falmouth, Mass.) clinched the win for Southern New Hampshire with
a 6-4, 6-3 win over Megan Margino.
In doubles play, Catalina Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and Alison Waring (Westboro, Mass.) were 8-2 winners at No. 2
doubles. Chandronnait and Mukdaprakorn suffered just their
second loss of the season at first doubles, as Adelphi's
Ribeiro and Maria Toft rallied from a 5-2 deficit to post an 8-6
win. Pease and Jean fell in a tiebreaker at third
doubles.
