MANCHESTER, N.H.—Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.) tallied two goals in the second half to lead the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University to a 3-0 win against Southern Connecticut State University in women's soccer action on Friday evening. With the win, the Penmen better themselves to 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the loss drops the visiting Owls to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in NE-10 play.
The Penmen scored their first goal of the evening with just over four minutes left to play in the first half as Daniela Abruzzese (Parsippany, N.J.) intercepted a throw by Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Olivia Heffernan and fired a 35-yard shot over Heffernan's head. The Penmen would hold the 1-0 lead into the half.
Roberge would waste no time tacking on another goal for the Penmen, as tallied her first goal of the evening 51 seconds into the second half. Ashley Jaskula (Palmer, Mass.) crossed the ball from outside the 18-yard box to Alyssa Thayer (Hooksett, N.H.) would found Roberge streaking on the left side.
Roberge would strike again in the 70th minute, dribbling through a pack of Southern Connecticut defenders to the left post, where she fired the unassisted goal past a diving Heffernan.
Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) earned her first start in net this season for the Penmen and recorded five saves en route to the shutout. Heffernan totaled 13 saves in 78:34 for the Owls before giving way to Katie DiDio, who was not forced to make a save. The Penmen outshot the visiting Owls 28-9.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Sunday, September 12, traveling to face No. 3 Saint Rose at 1:00 p.m.
