PHILADELPHIA—The Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 3-1 win against Holy Family University on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play at Tiger Field.
After a scoreless first half, Bethi Ledoux (Westborough, Mass.) connected on a crossed header from Ariel Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) in the 61st minute to post a 1-0 lead for the Penmen. Three minutes later, Emily Donahue (Bristol,R.I.) found the back of the net in the lower right corner to tally her first goal of the season and give the Penmen the 2-0 advantage.
Holy Family would answer in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by Kimber Kissleback to bring the Tigers within one, but Donahue would set up Kasey Morrison (Hampton, N.H.) for a breakaway goal 14 minutes later to solidify the 3-1 final in favor of SNHU.
Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) made four saves en route to the win for the Penmen. Holy Family goalkeeper Gina Mansi posted five saves in the loss. The visiting Penmen outshot their hosts 18-9 on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday, September 6 at 4:00 p.m. when it hosts Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Larkin Field.
