Women's Basketball Pushes Past Panthers 81-74

Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) handed out 15 assists and added eight points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to an 81-74 win over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.  The Penmen improved to 15-4 and 10-3 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Panthers are now 6-11 and 4-9 in the league.

Duffy's 15 assists, which are a career-high, match the single-game high in all of Division II this season, established by Brittany Ward of Saint Edward's Thursday night against Oklahoma Panhandle.  She also unofficially takes over the Division II lead in assists per game from Cambria Smith of Texas Woman's, as Duffy is now averaging 7.8 assists per game while Smith is averaging 7.6.  Duffy committed just a pair of turnovers in Saturday's contest.

Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) recorded her third-straight double-double for the Penmen, pacing four players in double figures with 19 points and 14 rebounds.  She finished 9-12 from the floor.  Freshman Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) had a season-high 18 points, knocking down three three-pointers and going 7-9 at the free throw line.  Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) was 5-10 from the floor and totaled 12 points, while Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) added 11 points and five rebounds.

Jessica Kitrys led Adelphi with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Amanda Campusano and Kelly Mannix added 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Sade Jackson added six points and 11 assists.

Southern New Hampshire trailed three times in the early going, but took the lead for good in the half with a 10-0 run capped by a Sorrell layup 11:20 before halftime to build an 18-9 lead.  The Panthers pulled within two, 22-20, with 6:23 to go on a Campusano three, but the Penmen countered with a 6-0 spurt and took a 28-20 lead 4:33 before intermission.  The guests would take a 31-27 lead into the locker room.

The Penmen opened up a 41-33 lead early in the second half, but an 8-0 Adelphi run capped by an Ashley O'Connell layup made it 41-41 with 13:56 to go.  Lorreta Rocha's (Espargos, Cape Verde) layup with 11:46 left capped a 10-2 Penmen run and gave them a 51-43 lead.  Southern New Hampshire gradually pulled away and took its largest lead, 69-55, with 4:08 left on a Wiseman three.

Adelphi used a 16-5 run to get back in the game, and a three by Kelly Mannix with 1:37 left made it a 74-71 contest.  SNHU would go 7-8 at the free throw line in the final 1:11 to secure the win, but not before a Campusano three with 21 seconds left made it 77-74.

The Penmen shot 57.1% from the floor in the second half and 46% for the game while limiting Adelphi to 39.1% shooting for the contest.  SNHU made five more trips to the free throw line and was 17-24, while the hosts were 12-19 at the charity stripe.  Southern New Hampshire eked out a 43-42 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 contest.  The Owls entered Saturday tied for second in the Northeast-10 standings and extended their win streak to 12 games with a victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon.
