Women's Basketball Downs Dolphins 61-49

MANCHESTER, N.H.Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) led three Southern New Hampshire players in double figures with 13 points as the Penmen defeated Le Moyne College 61-49 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  SNHU improves to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Dolphins fall to 2-9 and 0-8 in the league.

With the win, SNHU remains in a three-way tie for third in the NE-10 with Pace and Southern Connecticut, two games behind league-leading Bentley (8-0) and a game behind second place Assumption (7-1).  The Penmen will face the 15th-ranked Greyhounds Saturday in Worcester, Mass. (1:30 pm).

DeRoma also finished with three assists.  Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) totaled 11 points and seven assists, while Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.  Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) chipped in with seven points.

Katie Hart led Le Moyne with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Jocelyn Ford registered 11 points.

Southern New Hampshire clung to a 32-29 lead 3:38 into the second half when it went on a 7-0 run to build a 39-29 lead following a conventional three-point play by Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) with 15:15 to go.  Le Moyne got the lead down to seven with 14:14 left, but the Penmen gradually pulled away, building their largest lead, 53-38, with 5:36 to go on a basket by Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec).  Southern New Hampshire maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Le Moyne jumped out to a 14-9 lead nine minutes into the contest following a jumper by Emma Cronk, but the hosts used a 12-2 run to take a 21-16 lead with 5:15 left before intermission on a Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) basket.  The Penmen opened up a 25-19 lead with 1:16 left in the frame on a pair of DeRoma free throws and led 27-22 at the break.

Southern New Hampshire held Le Moyne to just 27.6% shooting in the second half and 36.7% for the game, while the Penmen shot 52.6% in the opening 20 minutes and 44.2% for the game. SNHU made eight more trips to the free throw line, going 20-25, while the Dolphins were 12-18 at the charity stripe.  Le Moyne outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 15-9 on the offensive glass and 32-28 overall, leading to a 15-8 advantage in second chance points for the guests.
