Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ashley Jaskula (Palmer, Mass.) scored midway through the first half and Samantha Whittier (Sutton, Mass.) posted her third-straight shutout in goal as third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University edged No. 8 seed Adelphi University 1-0 in the finals of the Northeast-10 Women's Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who earned an automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA field with the win, improve to 13-5-3 on the season, while the Panthers, who had already pulled two road upsets en route to the final, see their season come to a close at 11-7-3.
For Southern New Hampshire, it marks its first NE-10 tournament title since joining the league in 2000. The Penmen will learn their NCAA first round opponent and destination Monday night at 7:30 when the Division II selection show airs on ncaa.com. SNHU will be making its third NCAA appearance and first since 2003.
Jaskula recorded the game's lone goal in the 25th minute. She took a crossing pass from Bethi Ledoux (Westborough, Mass.) in the box and one-touched it for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Whittier recorded her third shutout of the postseason and improved to 5-0 on the season by making one save, while Adelphi keeper Sam Whitney recorded six saves as the Penmen outshot the Panthers 14-3. The guests did record six of the game's eight corner kicks.
Senior defender Daniela Abruzzese (Parsippany, N.J.) was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player after anchoring the defense to three straight shutouts. Jaskula and Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass.) were also named to the All-Championship Team.
With the Southern New Hampshire men also winning their Northeast-10 tournament title on Sunday, SNHU becomes just the third school to claim both NE-10 soccer crowns in the same year. Springfield College did it in 1989 while Franklin Pierce achieved the feat in 2006.
