Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Fourth-seeded Dowling College edged No. 5 seed Southern New Hampshire University 5-4 in a six-round penalty kick shootout after the two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Friday at Larkin Field. The game, which will be recorded officially as a tie, moves the Golden Lions to 13-3-3, while the Penmen see their season come to a close at 13-5-4.
Dowling advances to Sunday's second round, where it will face top-seeded LIU-Post at noon at Larkin Field.
In the shootout, both teams came up empty in the first round, with Dowling keeper Melissa Guglielmo and Penmen keeper Maggie Weldon (Manchester, N.H.) each making stops. The two teams would convert each of their next four attempts to sit tied 4-4 after the first five rounds. Kaleigh Roberge (Manchester, N.H.), Ashley Jaskula (Palmer, Mass.), Morgan Branco (Norton, Mass.) and Gabby Cappello (Andover, Mass.) converted for SNHU.
Southern New Hampshire, which was going first, was denied to open the sixth round as Guglielmo came up with a stop on Tara Murphy (Hampden, Mass.). Alexandria Abruzzo moved Dowling to the second round when she converted in round six.
Southern New Hampshire outshot Dowling 12-3 and had several chances. Late in the first half Branco found herself alone in front, but Guglielmo was able to make the stop. With just under 18 minutes to go in regulation, Jaskula has an attempt that got past Guglielmo but hit the upper left post.
Guglielmo made five saves en route to the shutout, while SNHU keeper Samantha Whittier (Sutton, Mass.) played the entire way in goal for the Penmen before giving way to Weldon for the shootout and made one stop for her fourth straight clean sheet.
Southern New Hampshire was making its third NCAA appearance and first since 2003.
