MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 3 University of the District of Columbia advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-3 win over second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University at The Derryfield School Sunday afternoon. The Firebirds improve to 17-3, while the Penmen see their season come to a close at 19-6 overall.
UDC took a 2-1 lead after doubles action, with the tandem of Alena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) and Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) earning an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles for the Penmen. Amanda Albuquerque (Weymouth, Mass.) and Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) earned singles points for SNHU, with Albuquerque a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 3 over Maria Vitkina, while Jean was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 6 over Tadai Abilla.
Jessica Nunez clinched the match for the Firebirds when she closed out a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mukdaprakorn at No. 1 singles. In the afternoon's lone unfinished match, SNHU's Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) led Maxime Dujist 4-1 in the third set.
Southern New Hampshire has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons.
