MANCHESTER, N.H.
– Three members of the Southern New Hampshire University
baseball and softball teams were named to their respective Capital
One Academic All-District Teams announced Thursday. Senior
Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) of the softball
team and junior Tim Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) and
senior Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) of the
baseball team all garnered First Team accolades. All three
are now eligible for Capital One Academic All-American honors.
The Capital One Academic
All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The program
has expanded for 2011-12, with separate Academic All-District and
All-America teams selected in Divisions I, II and III, as well as
the College division for NAIA, junior college and Canadian
institutions.
Barton, a Business Administration
major with a 3.62 grade point average, was the lone senior on a
Penmen softball team that posted a school-record 28 victories and
finished with a 28-19 overall record. She collected
Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference honors after starting all
47 games in the outfield and batting .329 with 23 runs scored and
10 runs batted in. Barton also made just two errors in the
field all season, handling 59 of 61 chances.
Flight, a Business Studies major
with a concentration in Information Technology carrying a 3.38 GPA,
has been the ace of one of the top pitching staffs in Division II
this season. In 11 starts this season, Flight is 6-1 with a
1.27 earned run average while striking out 106 batters in 77.2
innings of work. His 106 total strikeouts place him second
nationally while his ERA places Flight seventh in Division
II. After striking out a career-best 18 batters against Saint
Anselm on March 22, Flight was named the NCBWA Pitcher of the
Week.
Spatkowski, a Sport Management
major who has compiled a 3.32 GPA, has started all 42 games in
which he has appeared and ranks second on the Penmen with a .325
batting average, while driving in 20 runs on the season. His 16
doubles place him second on the squad, while his 17 multi-hit games
lead Southern New Hampshire. Behind the plate, Spatkowski has
committed just one error in 166 chances.
