Women's Basketball Cruises Past Adelphi 76-56

MANCHESTER N.H. – Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) led three Southern New Hampshire University players in double figures with 21 points as the Penmen pushed past Adelphi University 76-56 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, winners of three of four, improve to 9-8 and 6-7 in the NE-10, while Adelphi is also 9-8 and 6-7 in league play.

DeRoma knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished 8-16 overall from the floor.  She also dished out five assists.  Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was 7-11 from the floor and tallied 16 points, while Kelly Chergey (Bow, N.H.) had a career-high 14 points, making all four of her field goal attempts while going 6-7 at the free throw line.  Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) and Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) notched eight and seven points, respectively.

Kelly Mannix paced Adelphi with 16 points, while Jessica Kitrys and Sade Jackson tallied 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Southern New Hampshire never trailed, holding the Panthers scoreless for the game's first six minutes and opening up an 8-0 lead.  The Penmen led 25-17 with just under three minutes remaining in the first half and closed the half on a 9-2 run capped by a Chergey layup with 36 seconds left to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.

The hosts opened the second half on a 7-2 run to open up a 20-point lead, 41-21, with 18:09 left on a pair of Rocha free throws.  Adelphi countered with a 11-3 run capped by a Jackson layup with 15:54 left to make it 44-32, and got as close as 11 on a Jackson three with 13:34 left that made it 53-42.  The Penmen gradually pulled away and took their largest lead, 76-53, with 1:57 left on a Wiseman free throw.

Southern New Hampshire was 16-23 (69.6%) from the floor over the final 20 minutes and shot 56.9% for the game while limiting the Panthers to 30.1% shooting.  The Penmen held a 46-30 rebounding advantage and took eight more trips to the free throw line, going 16-19 while Adelphi was 5-11 at the charity stripe.

Southern New Hampshire returns home Tuesday night when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University in a 5:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
