Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) totaled a season-best 24 points and a career high 17 rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 68-50 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Le Moyne College at Ted Grant Court Wednesday night. The Penmen evened their overall record at 6-6 and improved to 3-5 in the NE-10, while the Dolphins are now 4-8 and 2-6 in the league.
Sorrell tallied 20 points and 12 rebounds in the first half and finished 8-20 from the floor and 8-8 from the free throw line. She also registered three blocked shots. Morgan Munson (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia) went 3-4 behind the arc off the bench and finished with 10 points, while Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) each added eight points for Southern New Hampshire.
Emily Greer was the lone Le Moyne player to finish in double figures as she totaled 13 points and eight rebounds.
Southern New Hampshire trailed just once, at 3-2, and opened up the game with a 14-3 run capped by a Sorrell basket midway through the first half that gave the Penmen a 21-9 lead. A 9-2 spurt capped by a pair of Sorrell free throws with 6:02 left in the first half gave the guests a 30-13 lead, and a pair of free throws by Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) 39 seconds before intermission gave the Penmen a 38-21 lead at the break.
Le Moyne scored seven of the first eight points of the second half to pull within 11, 39-28, with 16:39 to go following a Greer basket. Southern New Hampshire held a 45-33 lead with just under 13 minutes left when it salted the game away with a 16-6 run capped by a pair of free throws by Meghan Ballard (Rutland, Vt.) at the 5:53 mark that made it 61-39.
Southern New Hampshire shot 41.8% for the contest while limiting Le Moyne to 23.5% shooting in the first half and 27.9% for the contest. The Penmen, who held a commanding 52-34 rebounding advantage, went 18-21 at the free throw line while Le Moyne was 9-15 at the charity stripe. SNHU made four of its 10 three-point attempts while the Dolphins connected on three of their 25 attempts from long range.
Southern New Hampshire returns home Saturday when it hosts Assumption College in a 1:30 Northeast-10 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Greyhounds are receiving votes in the latest WBCA/ESPN/USA Today Division II Top 25.
