Women's Basketball Holds Off Georgian Court 70-62

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Amra Elezovic (Manchester, N.H.) totaled a career high 22 points as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team held off Georgian Court University 70-62 Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Penmen evened their record at 1-1, while the Lions are now 0-2 on the season.

Elezovic also grabbed seven rebounds and led three Penmen in double figures.  Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) was 7-11 from the floor and finished with 14 points, while Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.) added 10 points and six rebounds.

Tahira Matthews led Georgian Court with 15 points and eight rebounds, going 6-13 from the floor, while Ashiri Broadwater recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire led 30-29 at halftime and the two teams traded the lead six times before the Penmen took the lead for good on a Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) three with 13:10 left that made it 44-43.  SNHU gradually pulled away and a Rocha layup with 6:10 left gave the hosts a 59-51 advantage.  Georgian Court cut the lead to four three times, the last time on a Broadwater layup with 1:42 to play that made it 63-59, but the Penmen sealed the win by going 7-9 at the free throw line in the final minute.

Georgian Court led for much of the game's opening minutes, opening up a 13-6 lead 6:46 into the game following a Keosha Parks basket.  Southern New Hampshire used a 13-4 run to take a 19-17 lead on a pair of Elezovic free throws 8:35 before intermission.  The Penmen extended the lead to six, 25-19, with 6:29 left on a Rocha layup, but GCU had the next six points to tie the game with 3:05 left.  Southern New Hampshire carried a 30-29 lead into the locker room.

Southern New Hampshire shot 45.2% in the second half and 40.6% for the game, while the Lions shot 40.4% for the contest.  Georgian Court held a 45-36 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire is idle until Saturday, November 16, when it hosts Post University in a 1:30 non-conference contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
