Stonehill Upends Women's Tennis in NE-10 Semifinals

GOFFSTOWN, N.H. – Third-seeded Stonehill College edged No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire University 5-4 in a Northeast-10 Women's Tennis Championship semifinal Friday night at the Allard Center.  The Skyhawks, who avenged a 5-4 setback to the Penmen last week in the two teams' regular season meeting, improve to 12-2 overall and become unlikely NE-10 title game hosts for that match on Sunday.  Top-seeded Adelphi fell 5-4 to fourth-seeded Merrimack College in Friday's other semifinal.  Southern New Hampshire saw a 10-match win streak snapped as they now stand 11-2 overall.

Southern New Hampshire trailed 2-1 after doubles action, but built a 4-2 lead as it took the top three singles flights.  Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) won at No. 1, while Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) won at No. 2.  Sarah Schöllgen (Meerbusch, Germany) won at No. 3 to give the Penmen a 4-2 lead.

Stonehill would grab the next two points to tie the match 4-4, as Victoria Barbetta edged Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) at No, 4 singles, while Meryl Lawrence defeated Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass.) at No. 5.  The match came down to a battle at No. 6 between a pair of freshmen.  Colleen O'Donnell downed Lindsay Baum (North Salem, N.Y.) in a three-set thriller, taking down the decisive third set 6-2 after Baum forced a third after a 6-0 win in the second set.

The Penmen, who led 2-1 after doubles in last week's match, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Vamvakitis and Loft prevailed at No. 1 singles by an 8-0 count.  Barbetta and Analise Kump won at No. 2 doubles over Schöllgen and Hann 8-4, while Lawrence and O'Donnell downed Baum and Green at No. 3 8-2 to give the guests a 2-1 advantage.

Friday's match closes out the fall season for Southern New Hampshire.  The spring schedule will be announced over the winter.
