SYOSSET, N.Y. – Trailing 2-1 after doubles, Adelphi University took five of six singles matches to defeat Southern New Hampshire University 6-3 in Northeast-10 women's tennis Saturday evening at SPORTIME. The Panthers upped their record to 5-4 and 4-0 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 8-3 and 4-1 in the league.
The loss marks SNHU's first NE-10 regular season loss since dropping a 5-4 decision to Adelphi on March 31, 2012, a streak of 21 straight matches. The Penmen have won 58 of their last 60 NE-10 regular season matches, with the lone two losses coming to Adelphi.
SNHU held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) and Sarah Schöllgen (Meerbusch, Germany) were 8-3 winners at No. 1, while Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) and Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) were 8-0 winners at No. 2.
In singles play, Vamvakitis was SNHU's lone double winner on the day, posting a 7-6 (10-4), 6-3 win over Charlotte Moreau at No. 1. Jean dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles, while Green fell 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 5.
Southern New Hampshire is scheduled to return to action Saturday when it hosts Queens (N.Y.) College in a 1:00 match at the SNHU courts.
