MANCHESTER, N.H. – Anchored by a sweep in doubles competition, Southern New Hampshire University registered a 5-4 Northeast-10 women's tennis victory over the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon. The Penmen upped their record to 9-5 and 5-2 in the NE-10, while the Chargers are now 7-5 and 5-5 in the league.
SNHU took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) and Sarah Schöllgen (Meerbusch, Germany) posted an 8-1 win at No. 1, while Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) and Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) were 8-2 winners at No. 2. Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass.) and Allison Valentine (New Hartford, Conn.) posted an 8-1 triumph at No. 3.
Vamvakitis retired prior to singles play, forcing the Penmen to forfeit a point at No. 6 singles. In singles play, Schöllgen rallied for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1, while Jean picked up SNHU's other singles point at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph. Hann (No. 2) and Valentine (No. 5) both fell in three sets.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Sunday when it hosts American International College in an 11:00 am match.
