NORTHEAST-10 RELEASE
SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Southern New Hampshire University pitchers Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) and Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H.) were named the Northeast-10 baseball Co-Pitchers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. In addition, freshman shortstop Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.) was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
Sylvester, a senior, and Viehoff, a sophomore, combined to set an NCAA record for most strikeouts by a team in a Division II nine inning game on Thursday, when the pair teamed up to strike out 22 Saint Anselm College batters in a game played in Haverhill, Mass. Sylvester started the game and struck out 11 batters over five innings, allowing four hits and two runs. Viehoff came in in relief and fanned 11 of the 13 batters he faced, with one batter reaching via error and one grounding out, as he struck out the side three times, twice in order, en route to the save in an 8-2 win.
The 22 batters struck out by Penmen pitching are tied for the second-most in any Division II game, but the three other times 22 strikeouts were recorded, it came in extra innings. The nine-inning record of 21 had been set four times, most recently by Georgia College against Piedmont in 2002.
Sylvester is 5-1 on the season with a 2.93 earned run average and 39 strikeouts in 46 innings of work. Viehoff has struck out 39 batters in 22.1 innings on the mound, split between starting and relief, and has posted a 1-1 record and 0.81 ERA in six appearances.
Cruz, who was named the league's Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, batted .412 with three RBI and had a .588 slugging percentage for the week. He hit safely in all four of SNHU's games, extending his hit streak to seven, and went 3-3 with two RBI in game two of a doubleheader sweep of AIC on Sunday. On the season, Cruz is batting .339 with 24 runs scored and 15 RBI.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Saint Michael's College for a 4:30 doubleheader at Penmen Field.
