NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team opened up its dual match schedule with a 6-3 victory over defending Northeast-10 Conference champion and preseason favorite Merrimack College Sunday morning. The Penmen are 1-0 overall and in NE-10 play, while the Warriors suffered their first setback of the season and are now 3-1 overall and in the league.
The Penmen opened by taking two of three doubles matches. Sarah Schöllgen (Meerbusch, Germany) and Lindsay Baum (North Salem, N.Y.) were 8-4 winners at No. 2, while Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) and Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass.) prevailed 9-7 at No. 3.
Southern New Hampshire swept the bottom three singles flights to secure the victory, while at No. 2 singles, Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) pulled out a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 win over Shakee Messina. Hann was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 4, while Green posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5. Baum prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Stonehill College in a 3:00 Northeast-10 match at the SNHU courts.
