MANCHESTER, N.H. – Visiting Southern Connecticut State University scored twice in the game's final 10:41 to upend Southern New Hampshire University 2-1 in Northeast-10 women's soccer Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Owls up their record to 4-3 and 3-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 3-4-1 and 1-3 in the league.
Trailing 1-0 since late in the first half, Southern Connecticut began to press forward with about 15 minutes to go. The Owls pressured and hit two crossbars before a sliding attempt from 12 yards out by Kieran DeBiase looped over the head of Penmen keeper Autumn Scanlon (Waltham, Mass.) to knot the game in the 80th minute.
The eventual game-winner for SCSU came with 2:22 remaining. Following a Penmen foul, Bryana Poulin sent a free kick into the box from 35 yards that Scanlon was able to jump up and control, however, as she hit the ground, the ball became dislodged and an opportunistic Maeghan Howard knocked it home for her first goal of the season and the eventual victory.
Southern New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead at the 37:07 mark when Megan Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season. She took a pass on the left wing from Rene Hamel (Wilbraham, Mass.) and after a touch, fired to the far right post past diving Owl keeper Erica Ridella.
Ridella made a pair of saves en route to the victory, while Scanlon recorded five stops as the Owls outshot Southern New Hampshire 14-5, including an 11-2 advantage over the final 45 minutes. The Penmen also recorded a team save when Bridget O'Sullivan (South Grafton, Mass.) knocked an attempt away. SCSU took three of the game's five corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Stonehill College for a 4:00 Northeast-10 contest.
