AIC Clamps Down Late, Pulls Away from SNHU

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Brianna Bishop totaled 18 points as American International College pulled away late for a 68-58 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.  The Yellow Jackets improve to 8-8 and 3-5 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are also 8-8 and 3-7 in the league.

Bishop led three Yellow Jackets in double figures.  Krista Ferrentino narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Imani Stepney added 11 points.

Junior Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with a season-high 18 points, going 7-11 from the floor and 4-5 at the free throw line.  Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) was 7-9 from the floor and finished with a season-high 15 points, while Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) was 3-6 behind the arc and added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire trailed 54-50 when it used an 8-1 run capped by a Doherty layup with 6:46 to play to give the Penmen a 58-55 lead.  Bishop tied the game on a three-pointer a minute later, and a Kamika Mason layup with 5:11 left gave the hosts a 60-58 lead.  American International held the Penmen scoreless the rest of the way, closing the game on a 13-0 run.

The Penmen trailed 39-34 at halftime, but opened the second half on an 11-2 run, and a Ryan layup five minutes into the second half gave SNHU a 45-41 lead.  The Penmen built a 50-44 lead before the Yellow Jackets responded with 10 straight points to take a 54-50 lead with just under nine minutes remaining.

The first half saw four lead changes before the Penmen took control, leading by as many as six on several occasions.  American International, trailing 32-26 with 6:29 left, closed the frame on a 13-2 run to take a 39-34 lead into halftime.

American International took eight more trips to the free throw line, going 11-15 while SNHU was 6-7 at the charity stripe.  The Yellow Jackets, who committed just nine turnovers, went 7-16 behind the arc while the Penmen were 4-10.  Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds and were nearly identical from the floor, with SNHU shooting 39.3% and AIC 39.7%.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Pace University for a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest.
