Field Hockey Falls to Franklin Pierce in Home Finale

Senior Cassandra Nickerson (Newton, N.H.) turned aside nine shots, but the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to Franklin Pierce University at Larkin Field on Wednesday.  The Ravens improve to 9-6 and 4-5 in the Northeast-10 while the Penmen are now 2-14 and 0-12 in the league. 

FPU opened the scoring just over 12 minutes into the contest when Carly Canavan converted a close-range opportunity for her 10th goal of the season. Shannon O'Leary doubled the visitors' advantage with 14:09 remaining in the first half, as she collected a feed from Natalia Bachelder off a penalty corner and rifled a shot past Nickerson to make it 2-0 heading into the break.

In the second half, the Ravens capped the scoring with a goal just under 10 minutes into the final period. Vanessa LeBlanc notched her fifth of the year after finding the back of the cage from in tight, providing Franklin Pierce with the final margin of victory. 

Meaghan Williams earned the shutout after a seven save performance, and improved to 8-5 in the Ravens' cage. Despite making four saves in the first half and five in the second, Nickerson moved to 0-2 in goal for Southern New Hampshire. Senior Melissa Chisholm (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore Amaris Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) led the Penmen offense with two shots on goal apiece.

Notes:
 - Southern New Hampshire University celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday by honoring Chisholm, Melanie Epstein (Bayport, N.Y.), Rachel Goldstein (Groton, Mass.), Alanna Lovejoy (Derry, N.H.), Nickerson and Austen Theroux (Goffstown, N.H.), as they each played their final game on Larkin Field.
 - FPU outshot the Penmen 13-9 in the game and held a 12-7 edge in shots on goal.

Southern New Hampshire resumes play on Saturday when it takes on Pace University at noon.
