Saint Michael's Pushes Past Women's Hoop Late

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Maggie Sabine totaled 20 points as Saint Michael's College erased a nine-point halftime deficit to take a 68-64 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory from Southern New Hampshire University at the SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.  The Purple Knights upped their record to 12-13 and 7-13 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 11-16 and 5-15 in the league.

Sabine finished 8-18 from the floor and also grabbed eight rebounds.  Makenzie Burud totaled 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Indira Evora added 15 points.

Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) placed four Southern New Hampshire players in double figures with 17 points on 6-9 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds.  Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) went 6-6 at the free throw line and tallied 14 points, while Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio) and Sara Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) added 10 points apiece.

SNHU led 35-26 at halftime and by as many as 13 early in the second half before Saint Michael's put together a 16-0 run capped by a Burud layup at the 12:22 mark to take a 44-41 lead.  The two teams would trade the lead seven times over the next six minutes before the Penmen eked out a 56-51 lead with 5:15 left on an Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) basket.

Trailing 58-54 with 4:35 left, Saint Michael's went on a 12-2 run to build an eventual 66-60 lead.  The Purple Knights took the lead for good on a Sabine basket with 2:02 left, and went 5-7 at the free throw line in the final minute to secure the win.

The Penmen trailed just once in the first half, at 2-0, and opened up a 10-2 lead five minutes into the game following a Griffin basket.  Southern New Hampshire took its largest lead, 35-24, with a minute left before halftime on a pair of Springfield free throws and led 35-26 at intermission.

Saint Michael's shot 51.9% in the second half and 40.7% for the game while SNHU shot 44.4% for the contest.  The Purple Knights held a 40-30 rebound advantage and held a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers for the afternoon.

Prior to the game, the SNHU women's basketball program honored seniors Wiseman, Springfield, Griffin, Chelsea Dunham (Johnson, Vt.) and Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde).

Southern New Hampshire closes out its season Tuesday night when it travels to Assumption College for a 5:30 contest.
