Sophomore Jill Piacitelli (East Greenwich, R.I.) registered 12 saves, but a pair of goals from Jackie Ballin propelled Mercy College to a 2-0 win over Southern New Hampshire University in non-conference field hockey action at Mercy Field on Wednesday. The Mavericks improve to 1-3 on the season while the Penmen move to 2-3.
The two teams remained scoreless for nearly 33 minutes in the first half as Piacitelli stopped nine shots and her counterpart, Julia Amell, turned aside a pair of Southern New Hampshire attempts. Ballin broke the ice with 2:04 remaining in the opening half, as she converted a penalty corner to stake the Mavericks to a 1-0 lead.
Ballin capped the scoring midway through the second half when she tallied her third goal of the season with 17:35 to play.
Notes:
- Freshman Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) led the Penmen with five shots and three shots on goal.
- Piacitelli recorded double-digit saves for the second consecutive game, and the third time in her last four outings.
- Mercy outshot Southern New Hampshire 21-11 and held a 14-8 edge in penalty corners.
What's Next:
The Penmen open up Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday when they travel to Bentley University for a 7 p.m. face-off with the Falcons.
