Freshman Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) tallied the first goal of her career, but a first-half hat trick from Lauren Giordano propelled No. 7 Stonehill College past Southern New Hampshire University, 8-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Tuesday night. The Skyhawks remain unbeaten in the NE-10 at 4-0 and improve their overall record to 6-4, while the Penmen move to 2-7 and 0-4 in conference play.
Giordano gave Stonehill a 1-0 lead 3:22 into the first before adding her second goal at 15:31. The Skyhawks carried a 3-0 lead into the half when Giordano completed the natural hat trick with 5:32 remaining.
After Stonehill scored the first three goals of the second half, Holt put Southern New Hampshire on the board with 14:12 to play in regulation. After having her initial shot attempt blocked at the top of the arc, Holt collected the loose ball and dribbled around a Skyhawk defender before flicking a reverse stick shot to the top of the cage to make it 6-1.
Stonehill responded with a pair of late goals, as Bonnie Woods tipped home a centering pass with 7:27 left in the game before Carly Andersen capped the scoring with a tip-in goal at 67:53.
Senior Cassandra Nickerson (Newton, N.H.) turned aside 11 shots during the game's final 28:33 for Southern New Hampshire after sophomore Jill Piacitelli (East Greenwich, R.I.) made seven saves in the first 41:27 of play.
Notes:
- The Skyhawks outshot the Penmen 31-5 and maintained a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
- Nickerson's 11 saves were a season-high, and tied for the fourth-highest single-game save total in her career.
