Sophomore Jill Piacitelli (East Greenwich, R.I.) stopped nine shots, and classmate Mikaela Gauvain (Salem, N.H.) collected her first goal of the season to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 victory over Dowling College in non-conference field hockey action at Larkin Field on Monday. The Penmen improve to 2-0 while the Golden Lions move to 0-3.

With just over 19 minutes to play in the opening half, freshman Lindsey Poirier (South Berwick, Maine) stickhandled through three Dowling defenders before finding Gauvain on the doorstep. Gauvain turned and fired a quick shot to the far post that beat goalkeeper Ariana Ovadia and gave Southern New Hampshire the 1-0 lead.

It would prove to be all the offense the Penmen would need, as Piacitelli registered eight saves over the final 54:10, including six in the second half for her second consecutive shutout.

Notes:
 - Southern New Hampshire held a 19-18 edge in shots and a 14-10 advantage in shots on goal.
 - Sophomore Erin Frost (East Andover, N.H.) recorded the first defensive save in program history when she denied Summer Carson's attempt with 27:51 remaining in the second half to keep the score at 1-0.

What's Next:

The Penmen resume play on Wednesday when they host Saint Michael's College in a non-conference clash at 2 p.m.
