Freshman Kylie Lorenzen (Holliston, Mass.) exploded for a career- and game-high 29 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team dropped a 72-68 decision to Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Lorenzen was 8-for-15 from the floor, including 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 12-for-15 from the stripe, to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Jennifer Shelp (Apalachin, N.Y.) was also in double figures for the Penmen with 10 points (4-8 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 1-2 FT).

Sierra Clark led Adelphi with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Lauren Nuss added 20 points.

Southern New Hampshire held an early 7-4 lead when six points from Samantha Brenner powered an 8-0 run that put Adelphi in front, 12-7, midway through the opening quarter. SNHU would climb to within one over three minutes later, but a pair of Clark baskets handed the Panthers a 16-11 advantage at the end of one.

Adelphi would stretch its lead to seven early in the second stanza, but Southern New Hampshire scored seven straight points, including four from Lorenzen, that leapfrogged it into the lead at 26-24 with 25 seconds on the clock. Nuss would drain a 3-pointer with four seconds left to send Adelphi into the break with a 27-26 edge.

After a Shelp free throw tied the game at 27-all just 1:05 in, Adelphi would not lead again until a Nuss triple three minutes later touched off an 11-2 run that including two more Nuss 3-pointers and gave the hosts a 42-33 lead with 4:43 to go in the third quarter.

The Panthers would grab their largest lead of the afternoon at 47-36 with 2:44 left before Lorenzen scored the first five points of a 6-0 spurt that trimmed the SNHU deficit to 47-42 after three.

The Penmen would get as close as four early in the final frame, but Adelphi would lead, 61-52, with 3:37 remaining. SNHU responded with a balanced 9-2 run that shaved the deficit to just two at 63-61 with 1:14 left.

That was as close as Southern New Hampshire would come, however, as Adelphi's lead would climb as high as six before a three-point play from Lorenzen made it 71-68 with four seconds left. Ashley Gomez would sink one of two at the line with two seconds left to seal the win.

Senior Erin Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) posted nine points (3-4 FG, 3-5 FT) and six rebounds, while sophomore Olivia Conrad (Hanover, Mass.) netted seven points (3-4 FG, 1-2 FT). Freshman Aaliyah Paxton (Hainesport, N.J.) registered four points (2-5 FG), nine rebounds and two assists, with classmate Brianna Camara (Fall River, Mass.) chipping in three points (3-4 FT), five boards and two steals.
