The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team nailed down its third straight sweep with a 9-0 win at Saint Michael's College on Thursday afternoon at the Tarrant Recreation Center.
Southern New Hampshire swept doubles play for the fourth time in the last five matches as sophomores Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) and Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) doubled up Nicole Kellogg and Abby Ramsay, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, graduate student Abla Chadli (Rabat, Morocco) and sophomore Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) defeated Amerlia Weeks and Caroline Sumner, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Lindsay Baum (N. Salem, N.Y.) rolled to an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot against Riley Kruger and Marissa Landry.
In her return to the No. 1 singles spot after missing one match, Chadli easily handled Kellogg, 6-1, 6-1. Morais beat Ramsay, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, while Sala also dropped just a single game with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Colleen O'Keefe at No. 3.
Wagner recovered after faltering in her opening set against Weeks to record a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory at No. 4 singles. Baum and junior Jacqueline Youngdahl (N. Providence, R.I.) both played pro sets, taking care of Kruger, 8-0, at No. 5 singles and Landry, 8-3, at No. 6, respectively.
Notes:
- The singles victory was the first of Youngdahl's career.
- Chadli improves to a perfect 11-0 at No. 1 singles this year, while Baum and Wagner are now 12-0 in doubles play.
- Baum has won 19 of 20 Northeast-10 singles matches dating back to last season.
- The Penmen will clinch the No. 2 seed for the Northeast-10 Championship with a win Friday at Saint Anselm College and would be the top seed if the College of Saint Rose could notch its first win of the season at Stonehill College on Saturday.
