Sophomore Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Lindsay Baum (N. Salem, N.Y.) continued their winning ways, but the second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team fell to sixth-seeded Adelphi University, 5-1, Friday evening in a Northeast-10 Championship semifinal match at the YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown.
Baum and Wagner forged an early 1-1 tie with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles against Vanja Savic and Maria Bruzon Gutierrez, but the Panthers brought a 2-1 lead into singles play with an 8-6 edging of graduate student Abla Chadli (Rabat, Morocco) and sophomore Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) and Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) began the evening with an 8-2 loss to Rebecca Fakas and Karen Serina at the top doubles flight.
Adelphi began singles play with a Samantha Perri 6-0, 6-1 triumph over an injured Poje at No. 4 singles, while the Panthers opened the lead to 4-1 when Sala dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 3 singles to Serina.
Adelphi clinched a spot in the conference final when Rebecca Fakas knocked off Chadli, the Northeast-10 Player of the Year, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 1 slot.
Notes:
- The loss snaps SNHU's seven-match winning streak.
- Baum and Wagner are now 14-1 in doubles play this season, while Chadli drops to 11-2.
- Southern New Hampshire was making its 10th straight semifinals appearance, but was in search of its first finals berth since 2013.
-Adelphi will now travel to top-seeded Stonehill College on Sunday in a rematch of last season's conference title match.
