Senior Cameron Joyce (Braintree, Mass.) scored four times and handed out four assists to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 23-9 victory over Georgian Court University in nonconference lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, N.J.
A total of 17 Penmen tallied at least one point while 12 student-athletes turned in multipoint efforts, as SNHU generated its highest scoring output in seven seasons. The previous occasion in which Southern New Hampshire scored at least 23 goals was on April 22, 2009 in a 25-9 triumph over Franklin Pierce University.
The Penmen put the game out of reach early with a 10-goal run that spanned the entirety of the first quarter and carried into the second. Joyce scored twice during that stretch and assisted on two other goals, while junior Daniel Trainor (Billerica, Mass.) added a pair of markers and had a helper. The run also featured the first career goals for sophomores Devin Calkins (Bow, N.H.) and Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.), as well as freshman Tom Schutz (Trumbull, Conn.). Senior Eric Johnson (West Suffield, Conn.), junior Cameron McGuire (Melrose, Mass.) and sophomore Chris West (Albany, N.Y.) accounted for the remaining Southern New Hampshire tallies, which happened to be their first scores of 2016.
After the Lions got on the board just over five minutes into the second, the Penmen responded with four-straight goals to push their advantage to 14-1. Sophomore Cam Rewucki (Dover, N.H.) netted his first of the season at 5:30 of the stanza and sophomore Corey Cairo (Wading River, N.Y.) followed with his third with 7:14 to play before intermission. Sophomore Dan Malave (Wading River, N.Y.) increased the lead to 12 at 9:56, and freshman Sal Lo Medico (Harrison, N.Y.) rifled home his first in a Southern New Hampshire uniform only four seconds later. Georgian Court added its second of the quarter with under three and a half minutes remaining to make it 14-2, but junior John Marcone (Canton, Mass.) found the back of the net as time expired to give SNHU a 15-2 halftime cushion.
The offensive pace slowed in the third quarter, with each team scoring three times apiece. Junior Zach Jacobs (Tewksbury, Mass.) opened the frame with his second of the year at 4:23 before classmate Nicholas Ouellette (Peabody, Mass.) collected the first goal of his career with just over four minutes to go. Calkins added his second of the game at 11:40, and the Lions closed out the quarter with a pair of strikes in the final two minutes to send the teams into the final 15 minutes with the scoreboard showing an 18-5 edge for the visitors.
Malave cashed in an extra-man opportunity 2:30 into the fourth off a feed from Joyce before three-straight goals by Georgian Court narrowed Southern New Hampshire's lead to 11 with 10:38 left in regulation. Schutz answered less than two minutes later with his second of the day and Cairo followed suit at 7:18. Joyce completed his hat trick with just under six minutes remaining, and after the Lions' added a goal at 12:08, the senior captain closed out his eight-point afternoon with his fourth of the day at 14:19.
Sophomore Michael Brawley (Tewksbury, Mass.) earned his first career victory in the Penmen cage after stopping five of the six shots he faced in 25 minutes of action. Junior Tyler Walsh (Northampton, Mass.) followed with five stops in 20 minutes of relief before classmate Matt McIntyre (Milford, Mass.) registered four saves in the fourth quarter.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire outshot Georgian Court by a 42-33 margin that included a 30-23 edge in shots on goal.
- The Penmen won the turnover battle (16/24), were nearly perfect in clear attempts (29-for-30) and converted on both of their man up chances.
- Joyce's eight-point performance moved him into sole possession of No. 11 in all-time scoring in program history with 136 career points. He needs just three points to move into the top-10 and 40 points to crack the top-five.
