Sophomore Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) pulled out a tough No. 2 singles win and also earned a No. 1 doubles victory as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team triumphed over Le Moyne College, 8-1, Friday.
Morais prevailed against Rithika Vajjiravelu, 7-6 (11-9), 6-2, at No. 2 singles after teaming with fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) to double up Tiffany Dun and Amica Benoit-Limosani, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Lindsay Baum (N. Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead with an 8-1 thumping of Cameron Aiello and Kim Driesen at No. 3 doubles before Le Moyne cut its deficit in half when Vajjiravelu and Christina Perry outlasted graduate student Abla Chadli (Rabat, Morocco) and sophomore Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain), 9-8 (7-5),
Chadli's easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dun at No. 1 singles started SNHU off on the right foot to make it 3-1, while Sala, Poje, Wagner and Baum also joined Chadli and Morais with singles wins as the Penmen ran away with the match.
Sala downed Benoit-Limosani, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, with Poje blanking Perry at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Wagner defeated Driesen, 8-0, at No. 5 singles, while Baum also earned an 8-0 pro set victory against Aiello at No. 6 singles.
Notes:
-Baum has now won 14 straight Northeast-10 singles matches and 15 of her last 16, dating back to last season.
