Junior Amaris Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) found the back of the cage just over 22 minutes into the first half to provide Southern New Hampshire University with all the offense it would need on Friday, as the Penmen opened their 2016 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey University.
Taylor tallied the game-winner off a feed from freshman Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) with 12:54 left in the first half, and junior Alexis Soucy (Windsor, Maine) made the lead stand with a pair of saves to earn the first shutout of her career.
Anna Fleetwood suffered the setback in goal for the Crusaders after stopping three of the four shots she faced. Nicole Wong also registered a defensive save for Belmont Abbey, which was playing its first-ever game.
Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire earned a victory in its season opener for the third consecutive season. The Penmen have taken the first game on their schedule each year since the program returned to varsity status.
- Friday marked SNHU's first road win since returning to NCAA competition in 2014.
- The Penmen held a 9-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Southern New Hampshire also maintained a 10-4 lead in penalty corners.

The Penmen continue their North Carolina trip on Sunday (September 4) when they take on Queens University of Charlotte (0-0) at noon.
