Junior goalkeeper Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) made seven saves, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Long Island University-LIU Post on Saturday in both teams' season opener at Southern Connecticut State University's Jess Dow Field.
The Pioneers wasted little time stirring things up as Alice Schonfeldt found the back of the net from 30 yards out off a free kick to make it a 1-0 game late in the sixth minute.
LIU Post doubled its lead late in the 23rd minute when Andrea Huntzinger's cross from the right side found the foot of Isabella Fuduli, who sent a low shot past Salmon from the middle of the box.
The Pioneers then all but sealed the victory with 9:04 remaining in the match as Huntzinger set up a strike from Veronica Saager that ran the score to 3-0.
Notes:
-Salmon made five of her seven saves in the second half. Hillevi Eklow turned aside all eight shots she faced for the Pioneers, including six in the second stanza.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot LIU Post, 16-14, while the Pioneers held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
