Graduate student Abla Chadli (Rabat, Morocco) and sophomore Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) each won both their matches, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was edged out by Stonehill College, 5-4, Saturday at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
Junior Lindsay Baum (N. Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) remained perfect together at No. 3 doubles against Carolina Alvarez and Colleen O'Donnell, 8-6, while Chadli and Sala made it 2-0 a 9-8 (7-2) No. 2 doubles victory against Nicole Downey and Emma Prinos. Sophomores Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) and Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) then dropped an 8-6 decision against Victoria Barbetta and Alexandra Vo at No. 1 doubles as the Penmen brought a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Stonehill tied it with a No. 4 singles win to start things off before Chadli downed Barbetta, 6-4, 6-2, to make it 3-2 in favor of Southern New Hampshire. The Skyhawks again evened the match with a No. 3 singles win, but the Penmen answered once more with Sala recording a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory to put the hosts one win away from taking the match. That would not happen, however, as Stonehill rolled to victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to steal the 5-4 win.
Notes:
- Chadli improves to a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles this year, while Baum and Wagner also move to 7-0 in doubles play.
- The No. 6 singles loss by Baum snapped her 15-match Northeast-10 singles winning streak. She entered Saturday having won 16 of 17 league matches dating back to last season.
