Senior Rianna Fasanello (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) scored her first career goal in the 38th minute, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory against Assumption College on Tuesday night at Larkin Field in a match that aired live on FOX College Sports.
Southern New Hampshire produced its first quality scoring chance in the 25th minute when sophomore Emily Roan (Bridgewater, Mass.) sent a corner service from the right and into the box, where it was volleyed on net by junior Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.), but Assumption goalkeeper Katie Hammer punched the ball away to keep it scoreless.
The Penmen went ahead, 1-0, on an unassuming play in the 38th minute, as junior Ariana Silvia (Brockton, Mass.) dropped a pass back on the right side for Fasanello, who booted the ball from 35 yards out and saw it sail over a leaping Hammer and perfectly into the top left corner of the net.
SNHU kept knocking at the door after halftime, with another corner service from Roan leading to a chance in the 53rd minute, but the header from senior Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass.) went just high.
Assumption countered one minute later when Kayla Nixon's quick shot from in close threatened to tie the game, but senior goalkeeper Paige Salmon (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) went down to the turf to make the save.
Southern New Hampshire made a bid to double its lead in the 68th minute when Peloquin was played in on the right side of the box before ripping a shot on net that Hammer made a great play on to punch away.
The Greyhounds came up with their most dangerous opportunity in the 76th minute when Jessica FitzGerald ran on to a loose ball in the middle of the box and tried to sneak it under the crossbar, but Salmon elevated and deflected the ball up and over to maintain the one-goal lead for the Penmen.
Salmon made all five saves she needed to, while Hammer stopped three shots.
