For the third straight match, juniors Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal), as well as freshman Casey Burns (Westbrook, Conn.), each won a pair of matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory against Bentley University on Tuesday at the Bentley Tennis Courts.
Morais and fellow junior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) were 8-2 winners against Corrie MacLean and Olivia von Oldenburg at No. 3 doubles, while Sala and Burns defeated Rachel Hui and Evann Welty, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, to bring a 2-1 edge into singles play.
Sala breezed past Hanna Fabianski, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Morais pulled out a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win at No. 2 against Hui. Burns battled to a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles against Tiffany Suchanek, with senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) posting a 6-3, 6-0 No. 6 singles victory against Alexia Petruzziello.
Notes:
- The win puts Southern New Hampshire in position to grab the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship. With one conference match remaining, a win against Assumption College would give the Penmen the third seed, while a loss could potentially drop them as far as No. 6.
- Sala has now won nine straight dual-match singles bouts.
