Juniors Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal), as well as freshman Casey Burns (Westbrook, Conn.), continue to help carry the Penmen, as they each won a pair of matches for the fourth straight contest, leading the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team to a 6-3 triumph over Assumption College on Wednesday at the SNHU Tennis Courts in the fall regular-season finale.
After dropping a point at No. 3 doubles to open the match, Southern New Hampshire seized a 2-1 lead going into singles, as Sala and Burns edged out Cassie Burbine and Julia Chappell, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, before Morais and fellow junior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) pulled out a 9-8 (7-3) win at No. 2.
Burns made it 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Paige Benoit at No. 3 singles, with Sala cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Burbine at No. 1 to push the Greyhounds to the brink.
A win at No. 4 singles for the visitors trimmed its deficit to 4-2 before Morais clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Chappell at No. 2 singles. Assumption then made it 5-3 with a No. 6 singles win, with senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) capping the contest with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Valeria Sanchez at No. 5.
Notes:
- The win earns Southern New Hampshire the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship, where it will host the No. 6 seed – either Merrimack College or Le Moyne College – on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
- Sala has now won 11 straight dual-match singles bouts. Morais (6), Baum (5) and Burns (4) also have singles streaks going.
