Junior Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) won both of her matches, including a No. 2 singles tilt, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory against the University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 3-0 lead following doubles play as Morais and fellow junior Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) toppled Lilia Rodriguez and Ashley Varrone, 8-2, at No. 1, junior Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) and freshman Casey Burns (Westbrook, Conn.) defeated Stephanie Gonzalez and Angela Mercurio by the same 8-2 score at No. 2, and senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) and Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) were 8-3 winners versus Caitlyn Burridge and Nicole Calabrese at No. 3.
Morais posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Rodriguez at No. 2 singles, while Poje dropped Burridge, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3. For the second straight day, the No. 4-6 Penmen players all recorded 6-0, 6-0 shutouts, with Burns beating Varrone, Wagner stopping Lauryn Burridge and Baum sweeping Shelby Clyne.
Notes:
- Sala lost a three-hour marathon at No. 1 singles against Gonzalez, falling 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 10-8.
- The Penmen begin the season 2-0 for the first time since 2013-14.
- Baum and Wagner improve to 27-7 lifetime as a doubles tandem.
