BOX SCORE

When and Where: September 23, 2017 – Garden City, N.Y. (Motamed Field)
Score: Adelphi University 1, Southern New Hampshire University 0
Records: SNHU 5-2, (2-1 Northeast-10), AU 2-5, (1-2 Northeast-10)

Junior Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) stopped 11 shots, but Emily Power's goal just over five minutes into the first half was all the offense either side could muster on Saturday, as the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team was edged, 1-0, by Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action at Motamed Field.

Offensive opportunities were sparse through the first five minutes of action before the hosts cracked the scoreboard at 5:10 of the opening stanza with the game's first shot on goal. A bounding ball through midfield found its way onto the stick of Jackie Brown on the right side. Brown sent a drive from the top of the circle into the center, and Power redirected it to the top left corner of the cage.

The Penmen carried the majority of play throughout the remainder of the half, as they outshot the Panthers by a 7-2 margin and generated four penalty corners to the three they yielded. Southern New Hampshire nearly knotted the game late in the first with a flurry of opportunities in the final 10 minutes of action. Back-to-back penalty corners led to a shot by redshirt sophomore Jackie Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.) that Amanda Gargiulo was just able to steer aside with 10:06 to play. Curtin keyed a penalty corner less than two minutes later that saw the ball find its way onto the stick of sophomore Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands), but her drive from inside the circle was knocked away by an Adelphi defender.

The Panthers clamped down defensively in the second half, and ratcheted up their offensive pressure to keep the Penmen off the board. Adelphi used a 17-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal, over the final 35 minutes of play to pick up its first conference win of the season.

Notes:
- Southern New Hampshire was outshot in the game by a 20-11 margin. The Panthers put 12 of their 20 shots on cage, while the Penmen totaled six shots on goal.
- SNHU garnered nine penalty corners while surrendering just eight to Adelphi.
- The Penmen are still off to their best start in program history, as they've emerged victorious in five of their first seven outings. The previous two seasons, SNHU was 2-5 at this point in the season.
