Women's Tennis Records 7-2 Victory Against Saint Anselm

Junior Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) did not lose a game at No. 2 singles and freshman Casey Burns (Westbrook, Conn.) clinched the match with her No. 4 singles win as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory against crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College on Wednesday at the SNHU Tennis Courts.

Burns and junior Kaitlyn Poje (E. Stroudsburg, Pa.) got the Penmen off on the right foot with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Meghan Golden and Tess Malerbi, before junior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) defeated Lexi Stathis and Maikah Bulpitt by the same 8-1 score at No. 3 doubles. Sala and classmate Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) outlasted Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes, 9-8 (7-5), at No. 1 to send SNHU into singles play with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Sala then made it 4-0, as she breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Malerbi at No. 2 singles before Burns clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Golden at No. 4.

After Hughes eventually took down Poje, 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 10-6, at No. 3 to get Saint Anselm on the board, Baum and Wagner posted respective pro-set wins against Bulpitt (8-1) at No. 6 and Stathis (8-3) at No. 5 to make it 7-1. Perkins capped the match with a 6-2, 6-2 No. 1-singles win over Morais.

Notes:
- The Penmen begin the season 5-0 for the first time since 2013-14.
- Southern New Hampshire claims two more points in the Queen City Cup standings and now leads, 6-3, in the battle for Manchester supremacy.

The Penmen return to action Saturday, Sept. 30 (1 p.m.) when they play host to Assumption College at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
