Freshman Sydney Carney (Northborough, Mass.) scored off a rebound in front in the 104th minute to lift the Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory against 19th-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday evening at Penmen Stadium.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Carney's fourth goal of the season is her second overtime winner.
  • Senior Miranda Peloquin (Greenville, R.I.) also found the back of the net for the Penmen.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ontario) racked up a career-high nine saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire went ahead, 1-0, midway through the 14th minute when freshman Dorthea Glorud (Brumunddal, Norway) settled a ball in the box and dished it out to the top for Peloquin, who ripped a shot that went off the fingers of diving goalkeeper Krista Aliscio and inside the left post.
  • The Penmen kept the pressure on early in the second half, with Peloquin nearly scoring her second of the game in the 49th minute, but her blast from inside the 18 rang off the crossbar.
  • Adelphi would gain the equalizer in the 53rd minute when Alexsis Weiser booted a shot from 30 yards out on the right that sailed over a fully-outstretched Rose and into the far top corner to make it 1-1.
  • The Panthers nearly went ahead for the first time in the 59th minute, as Kerianne Scorce dribbled in toward the box on the endline and sent a low shot past a diving Rose, but Carney was able to deflect it out of danger on the goal line.
  • The back-and-forth continued early in the 63rd minute, as Carney won a 50-50 ball, sped down the field and slotted a beautiful thru-ball to senior Danielle Humphreys (Hebron, Conn.), who chased it down deep on the right flank and was able to put a hard shot on net, but right into the waiting arms of Aliscio.
  • Rose saved the game with under a minute remaining in the first overtime when Michelle Wienecke ripped a shot from straight on inside the box, but Rose leaped to knock it down and then dove to the turf to cover the ball up.
  • Just under four minutes into the second extra session, graduate student Sydney Crema (Litchfield, N.H.) dribbled into the left side of the 6-yard box before dishing a pass to Carney. Carney's initial shot was stopped by Aliscio, but Carney stuck with it and sent a left-footed poke into the back of the net.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Aliscio made 10 saves for the Panthers.
  • SNHU outshot Adelphi, 23-16, including 4-1 in the second overtime.
  • The Penmen also owned an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks, including 7-1 in the second stanza.

  • After beating Merrimack, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday, this marks the first time since Sept. 19-21, 2016 Southern New Hampshire has played back-to-back extra-session matches.
  • Amazingly, it is the first time in program history, which dates back to 1982, the Penmen have played consecutive overtime contests and won both.
  • After beginning the season 6-0-0, Adelphi is now 1-2-1 over its last four.
  • Monteiro picks up his first win on his birthday since taking over as head coach of the Penmen in 2014.

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 10 (7 p.m.) when they play host to Bentley University in a nationally-televised contest on FOX College Sports at Penmen Stadium.
