BOX SCORE

When and Where: November 6, 2018 – Manchester, N.H. (Larkin Field)
Score: Southern New Hampshire University 6, University of New Haven 0
Records: SNHU 10-7 (8-4 Northeast-10 Conference), UNH 2-15 (1-12 Northeast-10 Conference)

Redshirt-junior Cassidy Huckins (Loudon, N.H.) posted a five-point performance on Senior Night, as the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team rolled to a 6-0 victory over the University of New Haven on Tuesday to secure the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Championship berth.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Huckins' goals were the 10th and 11th of the season.
  • Seniors Lindsey Poirier (South Berwick, Maine), Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.), and Jackie Curtin (Londonderry, N.H.), as well as freshman Faye Turkmen (Bergen, The Netherlands), also found the back of the net for the Penmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire jumped on the board just 2:26 into the contest when redshirt-junior Katelin Oberlander (West Yarmouth, Mass.) collected her own rebound and slid a quick pass to the left for Poirier, who sent a long shot into the far right side of the cage to make it 1-0.
  • Junior Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) nearly made it 2-0 midway through the 20th minute, but her hard shot rang off the crossbar.
  • The Penmen did double their lead just over 90 seconds later when Holt took a ball away from a New Haven defender in the SNHU offensive zone, dribbled all the way in on New Haven goalkeeper Natalie Shaker, made a move around her, and buried the ball in the open net.
  • Southern New Hampshire extended its lead to 3-0 just under eight minutes into the second half when Huckins gathered her own rebound and sent a shot toward the left post that was tipped in by Curtin.
  • Turkmen made it a 4-0 game late in the 48th minute with a long shot from deep on the right side of the circle that made it past Shaker.
  • Huckins stretched the advantage to 5-0 in the 55th minute, as she carried the ball in from the right flank, maneuvered in front, and put a shot inside the left post.
  • Huckins scored her second of the contest with just 1:15 remaining, as she received a long pass across the circle from van der Doorn and easily put it in at the left post.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Senior Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) made one save, playing the entire first half, as well as the final 1:34 of the contest. Sophomore Kate Pigsley (E. Kingston, N.H.) also recorded a stop in 33:26 of action.
  • The Penmen outshot the Chargers, 40-7, which included a 25-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Southern New Hampshire also owned a 13-6 margin in penalty corners.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire, which clinched its first Northeast-10 Championship berth in program history with the win, currently sits fifth in the NE10 with a league record of 8-4. SNHU is a half-game out of the fourth spot with one game remaining and would need a win in the regular-season finale, as well as two Saint Anselm College losses, to earn a quarterfinal home match.
  • The Penmen picked up their 10th win of the season on Tuesday, which sets a new single-season program record for wins. Southern New Hampshire won nine games in 2016 and eight a season ago.
  • Huckins' five-point effort marked the second time this season she notched five or more points, as she now has 11 goals and four assists for 26 points this year – all of which are career highs.
  • Huckins, Poirier, Holt, Curtin, Oberlander, van der Doorn, Rennie, Maaike Gerkema (Driebergen, The Netherlands), Alyssa Scott (Bedford, N.H.), and Megan Lewis-Taylor (Nashua, N.H.) were all honored in a Senior Night ceremony prior to the contest.

UP NEXT

  • Southern New Hampshire wraps up its regular season Friday, Nov. 9 (6 p.m.) when it takes on Assumption College.
