Score: Southern New Hampshire University 2, Assumption College 1
Records: SNHU 1-0, Assumption 0-1
Sophomore Taylor Gent (Pretoria, South Africa) scored what would prove to be the game winner in the 51st minute, as the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Assumption College on Saturday at Larkin Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Gent's goal was the second of her career.
- Senior Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) also added a goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Penmen came ready to play, making it 1-0 just 1:49 into the contest when Holt shoved the ball into the back of the net following a chaotic scrum in front.
- Senior Lindsey Poirier (So. Berwick, Maine) kept it a 1-0 game early in the second half when she swept a ball off the goal line and out of danger, putting an end to an early Assumption celebration.
- SNHU made it 2-0 with under 20 minutes to go in regulation when Poirier collected the ball off a corner insert and fired a shot that was turned aside by Assumption goalkeeper Sarah Bodzinski, but Gent was alone at the left post to knock the ball into the cage.
- Poirier again played stopper just two minutes later, breaking up a 2-on-1 that would have cut the Penmen lead in half.
- Assumption did make it onto the board just over two minutes after that when Jennifer Beardsley's shot from the right side of the arc deflected in past senior goalkeeper Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.).
- Rennie would make a pair of saves down the stretch to preserve the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rennie made three saves, while Bodzinski stopped nine shots.
- The Penmen outshot the Greyhounds, 13-10, including 10-0 in the opening half.
- Assumption held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
