Senior Maddie Holt (Seabrook, N.H.) scored to make it a one-goal game in the first half, but Saint Anselm College added two late goals to secure a 4-1 victory against the Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team on Wednesday evening at Larkin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saint Anselm struck first just 4:31 into the contest when Mary Nee gathered a rebound at the top right of the circle and sent a long shot past senior Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) and into the far right corner of the net.
  • The visitors doubled their lead just over a minute-and-a-half later off a corner play when Kendall Clifford's shot was deflected in front by Hanna Friend and redirected into the cage.
  • Southern New Hampshire jumped on the board in the 23rdminute, as Holt collected a short pass from sophomore Hélène Servais (Brussels, Belgium) on the left and sent a reverse-stick shot into the top right corner of the net to slice the deficit in half.
  • The Penmen looked to have the equalizer with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half Servais put a shot past Saint Anselm goalkeeper Julia Hand from in close, but Kaeleigh Lord made a monster defensive save on the goal line to maintain the lead.
  • Following a deadlocked opening 25-plus minutes of the second half, Saint Anselm grabbed some insurance in the 62ndminute when Emma Bartle's initial shot was stopped by Rennie, but Clifford was right on the doorstep to hammer a shot off a Penmen defender's stick and in.
  • The Hawks put the finishing touches on the win with under three minutes to go, as Bartle rifled a low shot from the right through the legs of Rennie.
