BOX SCORE

When and Where: September 12, 2018 – Manchester, N.H. (Melucci Field)
Score: Saint Anselm College 1, Southern New Hampshire University 0
Records:
Saint Anselm 2-2-0 (2-2-0 NE10), SNHU 3-2-0 (1-1-0 NE10)

Despite a 20-13 advantage in shots for the 12th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team, a 22nd-minute goal proved to be the difference as crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College snuck away with a 1-0 win Wednesday at Melucci Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Freshman Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ontario) made three saves.
  • Junior Shae Roys (No. Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Allyson Patterson (Seekonk, Mass.) each generated a team-high three shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern New Hampshire controlled the early going, forcing three saves from Saint Anselm goalkeeper Payton Wildrick and another stop by a defender on the back line, but it was the Hawks that would break through first, as Corey Murray's pass on a 2-on-1 led to a shot by Caly Farina that deflected into the goal to make it 1-0.
  • The Penmen would continue to pepper the Saint Anselm defensive end with shots through the remainder of the opening half, but went to the break with nothing to show for it.
  • Saint Anselm nearly went ahead 2-0 late in the 78th minute, but Alex Phoebe's header rang off the crossbar and was cleared out of harm's way.
  • SNHU put some pressure on late, forcing Wildrick to make a pair of saves.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Wildrick turned away 11 shots for the Hawks, who also received a pair of team stops.
  • The Penmen owned a 9-5 shot margin in the opening half.
  • SNHU also held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, including 5-1 in the second half.
  • Saint Anselm committed 19 of the match's 29 fouls.

NOTES

  • The loss snaps a three-game win streak against the Hawks and is Southern New Hampshire's first loss against its in-city rival since it dropped a 1-0 decision at Saint Anselm on Oct. 21, 2014.
  • The Penmen lose for just the seventh time in 34 matches (22-7-5; .721) dating back to the 2016 campaign.
  • The loss gave Saint Anselm its first two points in the Queen City Cup standings, which trimmed the SNHU lead to 3-2 in the battle for Manchester supremacy.

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, Sept. 15 (12 p.m.) against Pace University.
  • The next home match for SNHU is Tuesday, Sept. 18 (7 p.m.) when it plays host to in-state rival Franklin Pierce University at Penmen Stadium.
