Carney's Hat Trick Paves Way for #23 Women's Soccer in 5-0 Triumph at St. Thomas Aquinas

Sophomore Sydney Carney (Northborough, Mass.) notched her first career hat trick to lead the 23rd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University women's soccer team to a 5-0 shutout of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Spartan Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
  • Carney scored her three goals on just four shots.
  • Junior Allyson Patterson (Seekonk, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist.
  • Freshman Victoria Roulston (E. Falmouth, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal.
  • Freshman Jordan Butters (Beverly, Mass.), sophomore Dorthea Glorud (Brumunddal, Norway) and senior Shae Roys (No. Billerica, Mass.) all collected assists in the contest.
  • Sophomore goalie Hannah Rose (Waterloo, Ont.) turned away all three shots she faced for her second clean sheet of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • With her team leading, 3-0, at halftime, aided by her eventual game-winning goal early in the fifth minute, Carney sealed both the win and the hat trick with 65th- and 69th-minute goals.
  • STAC goalkeeper Alex Santoriello racked up nine saves.
  • The Penmen outshot the Spartans, 24-4, including 12-1 in the opening stanza.
  • SNHU tallied the only two corner kicks in the match.
NOTES
  • This marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
  • Carney's three-goal outburst is the first multi-goal performance of her career.
  • Patterson, who has recorded at least one point in nine of 10 matches this season, holds the team lead in points (18) and goals (8), while Carney is second in both categories with 17 and 5, respectively.
  • The Penmen improve to 40-12-8 (.733) over their last 60 matches dating back to the 2016 campaign.

  • The Penmen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 (11 a.m.) when they take on Le Moyne College.
  • The next home game for SNHU will be the Homecoming contest on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Assumption College (4 p.m.). The match will air live on FOX College Sports.
