Women's Hoop Comes From Behind to Pluck 74-68 Win from Saint Rose

Senior Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) dropped a game-high 24 points and junior Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) added her first career double-double, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team came away with a 74-68 road win versus the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at Nolan Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire trailed, 56-48, with just under eight-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation when nine points from Russell, five from Dean and three from Terry crafted a 17-5 rush that catapulted the Penmen in front, 65-61, with less than five minutes to go.
  • Saint Rose would pull even at 65-65, but a Russell bucket at the 3:12 mark gave SNHU the lead for good. Another basket from Timberlake handed the Penmen more breathing room and the visitors would go 5-for-8 from the line down the stretch to seal it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Nina Fedullo paced Saint Rose with 21 points (7-14 FG, 7-12 FT) and 16 rebounds.
  • The Golden Knights outshot the Penmen, 51.9 percent (28-54) to 40.4 percent (23-57), while SNHU returned the favor from long range, 33.3 percent (8-24) to 18.8 percent (3-16).
  • SNHU was also plus-11 from the stripe and shot it better, 69 percent (20-29) to 60 percent (9-15).
  • The Penmen collected more points off turnovers (23-6), second chance points (15-8) and fastbreak points (13-4), in addition to producing a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (11/6-17/14), while the Golden Knights captured the glass (34-32) and the paint (38-26).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire wins for the fourth time in six games, while Saint Rose drops its fourth straight.
  • Despite trailing in the all-time series, 16-13, SNHU has now won three straight against Saint Rose. The Penmen also snap a two-game skid in Albany, defeating the Golden Knights on their home floor for the first time since Jan. 18, 2014 (80-59).
  • The six turnovers for the Penmen match their season low.
  • Dean scores 20 or more points for the second time this season and in her career.
  • Russell's double-double is the first of her career.

  • The Penmen are back in action Tuesday, Jan. 28 (5:30 p.m.) when they play host to the University of New Haven at the Stan Spirou Field House.
