Women's Basketball Earns NE10 First Round Home Game with 79-65 Win Over Saint Michael's

Junior Gyanna Russell (E. Hampton, Conn.) and senior Victoria Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) combined for 36 points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 79-65 Senior Night victory against Saint Michael's College at the Stan Spirou Field House.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Southern New Hampshire led, 30-20, just prior to the midway point of the second quarter when it used a 16-4 run - with four points from Roche and three from Timberlake - to open a 46-24 advantage with 7:17 left in the third.
  • After SNHU held its largest lead of the contest at 51-28 with 6:10 to go in the third quarter, Saint Michael's ripped off a balanced 18-6 run that featured six scorers and slashed its deficit to 57-46 with 11 seconds remaining before the final frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Emma MacDonough paced Saint Michael's with 11 points (5-12 FG, 1-2 FT), while Taylor Miller added 10 (4-11 FG, 2-2 FT).
  • The Penmen outshot the Purple Knights, 43.8 percent (28-64) to 37.7 percent (26-69), including 16.7 percent (4-24) to 12 percent (3-25) from deep.
  • SNHU was also plus-9 from the line and shot it better, 76 percent (19-25) to 66.7 percent (10-15).
  • The Penmen captured the glass (43-42) and the paint (44-30), and collected more points off turnovers (18-15) and on the fast break (16-2), in addition to turning in a more impressive assist-to-turnover ratio (10/12-9/13). The Purple Knights gathered more second chance points (12-11) and received more scoring from their bench (25-13).
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire halts a two-game skid, while Saint Michael's ends its season having lost 11-in-a-row.
  • SNHU, by virtue of its win and an Assumption College loss, earns the No. 4 seed in the NE10 Northeast Division and will host American International College, the Southwest's No. 5 seed, in an NE10 Championship first round tilt Friday, Feb. 28 (7 p.m.) at the Stan Spirou Field House. It marks the second straight season the Penmen and Yellow Jackets will meet in the NE10 first round, as the two teams played last season in Springfield, Mass.
  • Southern New Hampshire, which leads the all-time series with Saint Michael's, 33-18, has now won five of the last six meetings, including three straight at home.
  • SNHU sweeps the regular-season series, as it also was victorious, 69-57, at Saint Michael's back on Dec. 4.
  • Terry tied Kristy Woodill's (1996-00) all-time program record for 3-pointers made with her 184th career trey.
  • Dean and Terry were honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
